Ground-Level Crossings and an Inclusive Public Space Planned for Bessarabska Square

Pharmaceutical company Farmak will contribute to financing the redevelopment of the area in front of Bessarabsky Market in Kyiv. The company will cover the majority of the project costs. Designed in line with accessibility principles, the project includes a fountain, landscaping, and the installation of ground-level pedestrian crossings.

The project concerns the site at the intersection of Taras Shevchenko Boulevard and Khreshchatyk Street, which has remained underdeveloped for many years. It was here that the Lenin monument was dismantled in 2013, yet the space has not been meaningfully reimagined since.

“Today, the square in front of Bessarabsky Market is not used as a полноценний public space. It does not meet accessibility standards, as the only way to cross the road is via an underground passage, which is not accessible for wheelchair users, parents with strollers, and many others. Therefore, the city plans to implement a new public space that meets accessibility requirements, current regulations, and the specifics of the location,” said Valentyn Mondriivskyi, Deputy Head of the Kyiv City State Administration.

The project предусматривает the installation of ground-level crossings, ramps, lighting, benches, and greenery. A fountain is expected to become the central feature, reflecting a long-standing tradition of Kyiv’s urban landscape. For example, the famous cast-iron Teremen fountains, produced in the late 19th century, can still be seen today in Mariinsky Park, the City Garden, and near the Golden Gate.

“Farmak supports the tradition of philanthropy, which has historically played an important role in Kyiv’s development. Prominent examples include the Khanenko, Tereshchenko, and Brodsky families, who made significant contributions to the city. For us, this project is an opportunity to be part of meaningful change in a city with which Farmak has been connected for over 100 years,” said Volodymyr Kostyuk, CEO of Farmak.

The project has been approved by the Advisory Council on Cultural Heritage Protection, the Architectural and Urban Planning Council, and the Standing Commission for Investor Selection of the Kyiv City State Administration. The city authorities will next hold an open tender to select a contractor for project implementation.
