Representatives of Farmak JSC took part in the Round Table “Patent reform and domestic market of medicines in conditions of military aggression”
The event was also attended by representatives of the Committee on Science and Education of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine, the Public Health Committee of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine, the Ministry of Economic Development and Trade of Ukraine, the Ministry of Health of Ukraine, the Antimonopoly Committee of Ukraine, SE State Expert Center of Ukraine, SE Ukrpatent, the Reanimation Package of Reforms, representatives of the national pharmaceutical industry and patient organizations.
Participants of the event discussed the importance of using the experience of the best international practices in the reform of patent law in Ukraine in order to protect fair competition on the domestic pharmaceutical market, find a balance between interests of the society and intellectual property interests in providing access to treatment in current Ukrainian realities of military aggression.
During the Round Table, Volodymyr Kostiuk, Executive Director of Farmak JSC, told about the prospects of launching domestic generic medicines on international markets and stressed the need for amendments to legislative acts: “The effective legislation of Ukraine in the field of protection of rights to inventions does not allow generic companies to carry out studies aimed at further registration of a generic drug until the expiration of a patent for the original medicinal product. This deprives Ukrainians of access to effective generics for less money. The Bolar Regulation allows generic companies around the world to develop, study, research and register generics until the expiration of patents for original medicinal products. This allows launching generics on the market immediately, literally the day after the expiration of the patent”.
